Snoring

Snoring may not be harmful in many cases but that does not change the fact that it is embarrassing and can put a real strain on interpersonal relationships. Oftentimes it seems that the partner or family members are more disturbed by the snoring than the snorer is.

It has been estimated that 30 – 50 percent of adults snore. Research is showing that there is an increased susceptibility as the age increases.

Snoring is a vibration of respiratory structures (usually the uvula and soft palate) and the resulting sound. Snoring is caused by an obstructed airflow movement during breathing while sleeping. Airflow blockage can be due to:

• Fat Gathering in and around the throat
• Obstruction in the nasal passageway

Sufferers of sleep apnea usually snore and therefore snoring should not be ignored. There have been studies that show a correlation between loud snoring and the risk of a heart attack.
