Menopause

The word menopause means the end of the monthly cycles in human females. When the interval between periods begins to stretch, it ends with menopause. It is the permanent stopping of reproductive fertility. It is one of the most difficult stages in a woman’s life.

During this period, the estrogen levels fall down drastically thus causing changes in a female’s body. Estrogen is responsible for the normal development of a woman’s uterus and controls the ovulation cycle while progesterone controls menstruation. In human females, menopause usually occurs in the middle of their life cycle (usually between 45-50 years of age). Women go through several mental and physical health problems during menopause. Some of the unpleasant symptoms associated with menopause are hot flashes, urgency to urination, itching, night sweat, vaginal dryness, itching, disturbed sleep, mood swings, insomnia etc.

A woman’s sexual drive usually decreases during this period. Physically stimulating activities that are not related to intercourse can help you increase your sex drive. A healthy estrogen rich diet combined with proper exercise can help you maintain your mental health and overcome the menopause period. An estrogen rich diet also helps in controlling the cholesterol levels. Foods like flaxseed oil, celery, lima beans, soy products, nuts contain extracts of plant estrogens. Reducing the intake of salt helps in water retention in the system leading to a healthy discharge of waste products. Meditation or yoga is also one of the best stress busters when it comes to mental health.

With the advancement in the healthcare industry, there are many natural remedies available for dealing with menopause symptoms. Women can also take hormone replacement therapy or HRT as a treatment for the symptoms associated with menopause.

Menopause is a natural occurring phenomenon and one should keep a positive outlook to overcome it.
