Depression
Few people make it through life without suffering at least some mild depression. For some of us we get our first taste of it after the birth of a baby, but for others the triggering factor is unknown...the sadness and fatigue just seems to build until we realize that we are depressed.
Depression is caused by an imbalance of chemicals in the brain. This is usually triggered by a stressful event or situation. Baby boomers seem to be particularly vulnerable to this disorder.
Perhaps that is due to the fact that they have and continue to strive for success and wealth. Additionally, baby boomers have dealt with many trends regarding the ever-changing recommendations related to raising healthy children. And finally, baby boomers are now the sandwich generation.
Baby boomers are in many cases working to provide for themselves and their children while assisting aging parents at the same time. This generation is sandwiched in between the two forces. Many baby boomers have come to accept chronic fatigue and stress as a way of life.
The problem with that acceptance is that the fatigue can lead to depression, thyroid disease, or even sleep apnea. It seems that depression is more common in women than in men. This may be partially due to the hormonal changes (both cyclic and age related) that women endure.
People with depression suffer with changes in appetite and sleep. The symptoms can have a tremendous impact on one’s ability to function up to speed. Many times the sufferer lacks the motivation and energy to succeed on the job. Relationships often deteriorate.
The depressed person is likely to withdraw from activities because the activities no longer hold an interest or hope for fun. People withanxiety disorders often withdraw from activities due to fears of embarrassment, often related to panic attacks. Both sets of sufferers are likely to develop depression and possibly agoraphobia.
But there are various treatments available. The first step in overcoming depression is realizing that you are suffering – the next step is seeking help.
